PUMPKIN POLLINATION / FIELD QUESTION
How Much Pollination Does an Acre of Pumpkins Need?
There is no single acre-wide bee number that guarantees pumpkin pollination. The more useful question is whether female flowers are receiving enough effective visits during their short morning bloom window.
01
Start with flowers, not hive count
Count open female flowers in representative field zones, then observe how many effective bee visits each receives during the morning.
02
Measure spatially
Compare field edge, center, and weak-looking zones. Bee abundance near hive placement can overstate whole-field pollination.
03
Follow the outcome
Tag or revisit observed flowers and compare fruit set. That connects visitation to a real crop response.
04
Use weather context
Cool, wet, or windy mornings can reduce activity even when colonies are present.
